EMDR Intensive Therapy: A Focused Approach to Healing

If you’re ready to work through a specific traumatic experience, phobia, or life event — and you have the time and capacity to focus — an EMDR intensive could offer the clarity and progress you’re looking for.

This is a structured, short-term therapy model designed for adults (18+) who want to address a specific issue in depth, without the pace or uncertainty of week-to-week sessions.

Who is This For?

This option is ideal if you’re in a place where you feel ready to focus, and want to make meaningful progress on something that’s been holding you back.

  • Are dealing with the effects of a single-event trauma (e.g. car accident, injury, medical procedure, or water-related incident)
  • Experience a specific phobia that interferes with life or activity
  • Are psychologically stable and able to focus on a defined issue
  • Prefer a time-limited, goal-focused approach to therapy
  • Can commit to several sessions within a condensed timeframe
  • Are seeking faster resolution than traditional weekly sessions may offer

If you’re unsure whether an intensive is right for you, you’re welcome to book a free 15-minute consultation to discuss.

How It Works

We’ll spend around 12 hours together online, usually spread over a few days. This gives us space to go deeper while still working in a contained, focused way.

A typical structure might look like this:

  • One or two 90-minute preparatory sessions (to get to know you, understand the issue, and prepare you for EMDR)
  • Three consecutive days of therapy:
    – Each day includes two 90-minute sessions (totaling 3 hours/day)
  • Any remaining time may be used for a follow-up or integration session, tailored to your needs

This format allows for more continuous work, which helps build momentum and deepen the therapeutic process. The structure is flexible and can be adjusted to suit your needs.

Why Choose an Intensive?

An EMDR intensive offers a condensed and focused way to process trauma and distress that might otherwise take months of weekly sessions.

Many people find that this format helps them get to the heart of the issue more quickly, with fewer interruptions. It can be particularly helpful when you’re feeling stuck, or when the idea of long-term therapy doesn’t feel like the right fit.

Benefits include:

  • Accelerated progress toward your goals
  • Fewer gaps between sessions, which supports continuity
  • A contained, supportive format for preparation, processing, and integration
  • Delivered online, so you can work from the comfort and privacy of your own space
  • Fewer sessions required overall – by working more intensively, we often need less therapy overall, making this a more cost-effective option in the longer term
